THE EFFECT OF ROAD TRANSPORT EMISSION AND ITS RELATED HUMAN HEALTH DAMAGES ALONG TRAFFIC CORRIDOR IN IKARE, AKOKO NORTH EAST, ONDO STATE

Abstract

Road transportation is a vital segment of the society without which movement may be very difficult. However, every automobile movement in space is without its negative externalities of which are air and noise pollutions. This study examines the health effects of automobile emission on those that subsist along traffic corridors in Ikare, Akoko North-East LGA of Ondo State. Survey research design was used to evaluate the effects of air and noise induced pollutions emanating from road transport corridor on those that carry out their daily businesses on the selected corridor. Variables studied on air-borne health effects are: coughing, breathlessness, nasal discharge, throat irritation, asthmatic conditions while for noise induce health pollutions are: irritations and discomfort, annoyance, stress, sleeplessness, disruption to effective communication and headache. Using descriptive statistical method, it was discovered that 13.43% of sampled respondents cough often, 3.48% have high level of breathless, 7.96% of the respondents have high nasal discharge, 8.46% of the respondents have high throat irritation, 3.48% of the respondents have high asthmatic conditions while for noise induce pollutant, 17.91% feel they are highly irritated and discomforted, 31.84% feels they are highly annoyed, 21.39% felt they are highly stressed, 11.44% experience high level of sleeplessness,14.43% felt noise cause a high disruption to them during communication, and another 24.88% says they highly felt headache. It is recommended that proper legislative work be done to stop automobiles that do not meet up with permissible emission recommended standard from operation.
