Abstract

The purpose of the study was to quantitatively determine the primary factors that have contributed towards the collapse of domestic airline businesses in Nigeria. A quantitative explanatory correlation research design was used to examine failure factors based on airline sustainability factors. A sample size of 113 participants was used in the study, which represented aviation stakeholders. Quantitative analysis was conducted using Statistical Software, SAS. The study ranked five top failure factors such as ownership and management structure, economic conditions, lack of supportive economic policy, financial performance and operational efficiency and airline leadership effect using highest sum and means.  The result revealed that leadership plays a significant role in the extent to which the various failure factors can predict the failing of a commercial airline in Nigeria. The study concludes that prevailing economic condition, policy summersault (Failure) and ownership and management structure are factors that require attention of leadership if failure of airlines is to be mitigated. Therefore, the study recommends that there is need for adequate technical knowledge of air transport system and air transport environment for airline leadership as a prerequisite for obtaining air operator certificate from Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
